How to Fix “ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR” on Google Chrome?

What does ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR mean?

The ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR means that your connection was failed to the contacted server. This might be due to change in date or time, the google browser is not updated, not clearing your chrome cache’s and cookies or it might be the firewall that is blocking your extension.

How to fix ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR

To fix this ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR on Google Chrome Browser we have 5 troubleshooting methods that will help you to get rid of this error. If one method doesn’t work try other and sooner or later your issue will be solved

1. Clear Browsing Data

Not clearing your cache and cookies of your Chrome Browser can lead to the SSL connection error. So follow the steps given below in order to clear your browsing data:

  1. Go to “Google Chrome“
  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + Delete
  3. Click on “Time Range” and set it to “All Time“

4. Now tick the following things given below:

  1. “Browsing History” option
  2. “Cookies and other site data” option
  3. “Cached images and files” option

5. Lastly, click on the “Clear Data” button

2. Check the Date or Time of your System

Date and time are some of the most common reasons for getting the SSL Connection error. The reason is that whenever you are trying to access the date of the server and your computer is not synced with that date of the server then you will get ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR on your browser. So follow the steps given below in order to change it:

  1. Go to “Control Panel“
  2. Click on “Date and Time option“

3. Now click on the “Change Date and Time” button

4. Then change your date and time to a recent one and click on “OK“

3. Disable QUIC Protocol

QUIC [Quick UDP Internet Connection] which provides SSL connection to the Google Server. So by default it is enabled on the chrome which causes this error to appear in your chrome. So follow the steps given below to disable QUIC Protocol:

  1. Open “Google Chrome”
  2. Now copy and paste this > chrome://flags/#enable-quic
  3. Press “Enter“
  4. Now the Experimental QUIC protocol option it is set to “default” so change and “disable” that option

5. Lastly, go to the bottom page and click on the “Relaunch Now” button

Note – By clicking the Relaunch Now button your changes will take effect on your Google Chrome

4. Clear your SSL state

In some cases, there might be a chance that cached information in the SSL cache might be responsible to cause the error. So follow the steps to clear your SSL cache and solve the error:

  1. Firstly, go to  Start Menu > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center.
  2. In the bottom left corner click on the “Internet Options”
  3. After clicking you will see the “Internet Properties” tab. Now, what you will do is:

  1. Go to the “Content” section
  2. Click on the “Clear SSL State” button
  3. Lastly, click on “OK“

Note – Clearing your SSL certificate will eliminate the problem of caching certificates since it wipes out the cache

5. Change your Internet Security and Privacy Level

Setting your internet security to high level might be the reason for stopping you to visit few particular sites. So changing your internet security and privacy level will help to solve the issue. Follow the steps given below:

  1. Go to “Search Bar” and type “Internet Options”
  2. The ” Internet Properties” dialogue box will open
  3. Now go to “Security” Section
  4. There will a slider given in the box so take the slider and bring it to the “medium level“

  1. Lastly click on “OK“
